Here are some

Questions and Answers.

LEVELS
Each of our trips has been rated "1" to "4" according to what conditions can be expected on the trip, with "1" being the easiest and "4" being the more challenging trips. Keep in mind that even easy trips may become difficult if weather conditions are adverse. On all trips, guests help carry personal and group gear and, on sea kayaking trips, help carry their boat up and down the beach (65-80 pounds for two-four people). Most of our trips travel to remote wilderness locations with no facilities of any kind, and evacuation may be prolonged and difficult. More specific information can be found in each trip's detailed itinerary.

Level "2" to "4" trips entail travel to remote wilderness locations without facilities and walking over uneven and sometimes slippery terrain.

LEVEL 1: Easiest

LEVEL 2: Easy to Moderate

LEVEL 3: Moderate

LEVEL 4: Moderate to Challenging
(Some trips are rated at level "4" due primarily to the length of the trip in remote wilderness, or because a specific skill level is assumed, not because they are extremely physically demanding.)

Glacier Bay was a great river of ice when John Muir explored it only a century ago. Now the bay is a water-filled fjord with glaciers falling out of the mountains to meet it. We will pitch camp in unforgettable settings and hike and paddle around the world's most famous glaciers. As the least visited arm of the Park, you will never question that you are in remote, pristine wilderness. Wildlife has maintained its natural abundance, and we hope to spot bears, mountain goats, marine mammals and seabirds.

Conde Nast authors traveled with us on our Glacier Bay Adventure and concluded, "In the seat of a kayak, Glacier Bay is the purest form of adventure." They found that "roughing it has never been so intoxicating." We recommend their article in the September, 1998 issue. This 6-day Glacier Bay trip is easier than the 8-day expedition, but it is still an active trip, and guests must be in good physical condition. Begins and ends in Gustavus.

DETAILED ITINERARY:

Day 1- We will pick you up from the Gustavus airport or ferry dock and go to our cozy, quiet inn. Borrow a bike, go for a walk, or just relax in this rural setting. We will gather for a delicious Alaskan dinner and attend the pre-trip meeting held at the inn.

Day 2 - After a hearty breakfast, we head to Bartlett Cove, headquarters for Glacier Bay National Park. We board a floatplane for an unforgettable flight to the head of pristine Muir Inlet where we have our first kayaking lesson and begin paddling.

Days 3-5 - We travel through geologic time to an age when icefields and glaciers covered much of North America. As we camp along the shores, we will witness the rebirth of a new land emerging as the ice retreats and new flora and fauna enliven the landscape. Glaciers and ice fill our senses, as we kayak, hike and camp in this fascinating bay. We will paddle along two or three stunning glaciers including the Muir and McBride Glaciers. On clear days, the backdrop of the Fairweather Range is unparalleled. This is a perfect trip for both experienced kayakers and active people who have never kayaked.

Day 6 - We board our charter vessel for a trip back to Glacier Bay park headquarters. Put your feet up and watch the terrific scenery and wildlife as you relax and rest your tired muscles. We will arrive in Gustavus in late afternoon, in time for the southbound jet.
