Discover
the beautiful Inside Passage in stable, two-person sea kayaks - the
backpacking alternative for exploring Alaska's wilderness. Sea
kayaking is the best way to experience the lush old growth forests of
the Tongass National Forest, the dramatic coastal ecosystem and the
varied marine life. Leaving from Juneau, we head out to the "end of
the road" and leave all civilization behind. The wilderness waters
around Juneau are famous for their beauty and productivity. Watch bald
eagles perched above, seals breaking the ocean surface, and an
occasional humpback whale. Walk the rocky shorelines with our
naturalist-guides, and feast on superb meals. You will be surprised at
the quality of our wilderness repast! The Coastal Escape can be
customized to suit your family or group. Begins and ends in Juneau.
Day 1 - We begin our day in downtown Juneau at 8:30 a.m. for
a pre-trip meeting. Please note you will need to be ready for
departure before the meeting starts - bags packed and ready for a
great adventure!
After the meeting, we drive 40 miles to the end of the Juneau road
system at Echo Cove. Our introduction to kayaking begins in this
protected cove along the mainland coast. You will be surprised at how
beautiful and wild a place can be within driving distance to a state
capital! We will paddle into gorgeous Berner's Bay and set up camp for
the night.
Day 2 - We'll paddle the scenic shores of Berner's Bay,
watching for wildlife and exploring the area. Depending on the wishes
of the group, we may spend some time in the afternoon beachcombing or
exploring the rich forests. We may also hike to a beautiful waterfall
above a salmon stream. The pace will be leisurely as we travel on land
or water. We will travel 4-5 miles a day by kayak.
Day 3 - In the morning, we enjoy breakfast, pack up camp and
paddle back to Echo Cove. We'll have lunch along the way arriving back
in Juneau mid- to late afternoon. Once back in Juneau we will take you
to your lodging, the ferry, or airport.
